English Department Profile

The goal of the BA program in English Language and Literature is to equip successful students with the necessary skills for English Language and Literature. The program focuses on two main areas: (a) Linguistics, which involves a comprehensive examination of language, including some emphasis on teaching English as a foreign language, and (b) English Literature, which covers major authors and topics from 1580 to the present day, and provides a detailed exploration of various literary genres such as poetry, drama, and prose.

The literature courses are designed to provide students with a solid understanding of the literary history of English-language literature and the cultural context in which it is produced.

The linguistics courses aim to give students a strong foundation in the fundamental principles of language study and the wide range of linguistic research. The TEFL courses aim to equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills for teaching English, with a particular focus on classroom management and the effective use of technology.

Programme Educational Objectives (PEO)

The Programme Educational Objectives (PEO) are the aims which the English Language and Literature intends to achieve. To fulfill the university’s mission and vision, the PEOs proposed are described as below. Graduates of the Bachelor of English Language and Literature, will;

  1. Have a higher level of knowledge and competency in English Language and Literature, with problem solving skills.
  2. Be able to communicate effectively to various stakeholders and practice their profession with ethical responsibilities.
  3. Be able to advance critical skills in English Language and Literature and keep abreast of current social, ethical and legal issues as well as technological advances in the field of language and literature.
  4. Be able to lead with autonomy, responsibility and work collaboratively and independently.
  5. Be able to utilize digital and numeracy skills to advance their knowledge and skills in career development with a global mind-set.

Program Learning Outcome (PLO)

Based on these educational objectives, at the end of their study, the graduates of the Bachelor of English Language and Literature will have;

  1. Advanced and comprehensive theoretical knowledge and demonstrate language skills related to the field of study, work and practice.
  2. Intellectual independence in the application of knowledge within specific field by applying critical, analytical and evaluation skills in the field of study/work and practice.
  3. Manipulate a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognize implicit meaning.
  4. Produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organizational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.
  5. Demonstrate decision making capacities, accountabilities and professionalism by working towards predetermined goals and outcomes.
  6. Use a broad range of information, media and technology applications to support study and work.
  7. Engage effectively in self-directed lifelong learning and professional pathways.
  8. Observe and identify ethical issues, make decision ethically, and act professionally within the varied social and professional environment and practice.

  1. Completion of secondary school with a minimum overall average of 50%
  2. Should bring the original and a copy of secondary school certificate
  3. Should bring Six (6) passport size photos with white background
  4. Should bring the original copy of a letter of good conduct issued by your secondary school
  5. Should bring a sponsorship letter from your guardian
  6. Should successfully pass an admission interview and/or test
  7. Pay non-refundable Processing and ID card fees of USD $50 (bank draft)

The sequencing of these courses is a function of the purpose of the course, level of students, and appropriate scope of the course within the general framework of the English Language and Literature Department.
